Radio program announces the passing of a literary giant, Solomon Deressa. The prominent Ethiopian poet, educator, journalist, and philosopher was a leading figure in the rejuvenation and progress of Ethiopian literature.

Great Modernizer and Innovator in Ethiopian Literature

He introduced innovative techniques and modern approaches to Ethiopian Arts and would be missed deeply. Among his major innovations was the introduction of free verse into Ethiopian poetry. Notably, many to this day find this a controversial idea. This innovation was introduced in his 60s’ book ‘Lijnet’. Lijnet means childhood in Amharic.

Solomon Deressa passed away in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he was residing at the time. Many view him among the great Amharic poets of the 20th century along with Kebede Mikael, Mengistu Lemma, Gebre Kristos Desta and Tsegaye Gebre Medhin.
