The White Azmari at the heart of Addis Ababa
Azmaris are itinerant musicians who are very witty and highly intelligent. Azmaris were traditionally regarded as low class back in the days but they are now well respected and loved by almost all. The Azmari culture might have started in the Northern highlands of Ethiopia but developed and practiced in many other locations through out the country Azmaris usually Play Masinko, Ethiopian Violin or Kirrar, Ethiopian Guitar.
The video shows a hilarious presentation of a white husband and Ethiopian wife’s musical dialogue. The husband is complimenting his wife while his wife responds accordingly. The couple also remembers about events and incidents that have happened during their marriage.
They also sing other traditional songs such as “Shegitu” meaning “ The Cute One “
In an interview Mr. Charles said he has sung “ Shegitu “several years ago with Orchestra Ethiopia. He speaks in Amharic about his experience in Ethiopia. He acknowledged the late Ethiopian musician Tesfaye Lemma.
