Ethiopia’s First Lady Zinash Tayachew Expresses Appreciation To Ammanuel Psychiatric Specialized Hospital Staff And Hamlin Fitsula Hospital During Day Long Visit

In line with her focus on health issues PM Abiy Ahmed's wife visits major health centers in Addis Ababa

Zinash Tayachew, Ethiopia’s first lady, since her husband was sworn into office two months ago in April spent Thursday, May 31, 2018, visiting two major health facilities in Addis Ababa.  Her first visit was at the Amanuel Psychiatric Specialized Hospital.

Until recent years, this psychiatric facility located near Mercato around the city’s largest grain market was the only one in the entire country. Doctors accompanied Zinash Tayachew as she visited the various wards on the compound. Amanuel hospital resonates very deeply with Ethiopians.

For decades Amanuel has become almost generic with mental health treatment. The first lady, Zinash Tayachew, shared words of encouragement with the staff. In addition, she also praised the medical staff’s determination and far-reaching positive impact.

Office of the First Lady Announces Areas of Priority

The First Lady, only two months in office has already announced her focus areas as children & women, elderly, disabled and mentally ill people.

A recent post on her Facebook page indicates this.  “She will work towards ensuring that every child in Ethiopia goes to school and access quality education in a safe environment; to end malnutrition and stunting among children, to change negative traditional practices and thereby work to end child marriages and female genital mutilation (FGM) and to prevent sexual harassment and gender-based violence, such as abuse and rape”

Another focus area for the young first lady is getting children off the street. An area which is increasingly concerning for Ethiopians.
