Over 3 Billion Br Worth of Contraband Seized in the Past Five Years
Ethiopian Custom commission announced that contraband goods worth 3.16 billion birr have seized as they were being smuggled into the country between 2014 to 2018.
In addition, the commission also seized 537 million worth exported contraband goods over the same period of time, Fana broadcasting reports today.
A total of 3 billion 697 million wort contraband items were seized in custom checkpoints according to the commission.
Coffee, which is the country’s main export, a multitude of livestock, cereals of various types, animal skins, fuel, and others goods are smuggled out of the country, according to information obtained from the Commission.
Officials from Customs Commission told the House of People’s Representatives last year that they were was having a hard time keeping up with the growing contraband trade into and out of Ethiopia as the contrabandists constantly alter their methods and contraband networks evade existing anti-contraband operations and controlling mechanisms.
